50th Anniversary Earth Day

by Katrin Scholz-Barth, President, SustainableQATAR

The biggest opportunity for a prosperous future and global optimism is our personal daily action!

We created a short anniversary present video for Earth Day about SustainableQATAR being there – alongside Earth Day – highlighting activities, COP18, Global Climate Action Day participations over the years to join the celebrations.

Understanding and appreciating the impact of the little choices we make each day is one of the goals of SustainableQATAR’s 52 Weekly Challenges.

Every single person matters, has a role to play and makes a difference every single day with the choices we make in our daily lives.

Today, on the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day it is as important as ever to think and do things differently.

In a 2002 Time Interview, Dr. Jane Goodall, said: “The greatest danger to our future is apathy. We cannot expect those living in poverty and ignorance to worry about saving the world. For those of us able to read this magazine, it is different. We can do something to preserve our planet. You may be overcome, however, by feelings of helplessness. You are just one person in a world of 6 Billion. How can your actions make a difference? Best, you say, to leave it to decision makers and so you do nothing. Can we overcome apathy? Yes, but only if we have hope.”

“We must never give into despair. “In the darkest times, especially now, HOPE is something we give ourselves. That is the meaning of inner strength.

These existing solutions are relevant for Qatar as well.

But remember: Hope is no strategy. Think Globally – Act Locally! Yes, we can make a difference in the world by making our voices heard and our (small) actions count – one person at a time. It’s empowerment for climate action in Qatar.
